Personal Power – Two Suggestions to Increase Your Power – And Your Positive Outlook on Life

powerLet me ask you a few questions:

  • Are you powerful?
  • Do you exude power?
  • Are you afraid of power?
  • Maybe even scared of your own power?
  • What if you acknowledged and released that extraordinary power?

If you consider words such as leadership, aptitude, potency, creativity, capacity, accomplishment, knowledge, and other similar words as being related to power…would you be any more comfortable? I hope so!

For this article, let’s take a look at just one type of power: Personal Power. This is the type over which you have a great deal of control (moreso that some of the others, e.g., position power, purse power).

Personal power can be segmented into two different aspects, although we will only be thinking about the latter in this article:

  1. Interpersonal, which involves others
  2. Intrapersonal, which involves the self

Here are two ways heighten your intrapersonal power.

#1: Turn off the news.

You have to – and I have to – distance ourselves from other people and news and anything else that is going to end up bringing us down. Certainly 24-hour news channels are great in some times and in some ways. However, right now – and for the last couple of years, in order for these channels to generate enough news to fill the scores of different ‘all-news’ channels (and I’m putting ‘all news’ in quotes), there is a barrage, a bombardment of negativity. Whether it’s about deaths or kidnappings or sicknesses or this person said that or the stock market is diving or sniping between and among various political figures and parties – or sensationalized nonsense – it is toxic to a positive nature and outlook.

So, today, right now, don’t wait; turn off the news. You hear this suggestion (or admonition) from almost anybody who is trying to convey the ideas of, “Hey, here’s what we need to do to try to focus on moving forward, taking care of business, taking care of our family, taking care of ourselves. Turn off the news.” You have the power to turn off your TV or talk radio or any other place that broadcasts TMI (too much information), especially when most of that information is negative and unhelpful.

Take a moment and write down a reason why you already have chosen to turn off – or are willing to try turning off – the news – and what you will say to someone else who questions your decision. Go ahead and do that now.

I found a great quote today from Carl Sagan that relates to this idea:

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. The bamboozle has captured us. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

In my humble opinion, that seems to have happened in a number of cases, given some of the craziness on the “news” channels.

#2: Keep a green bough in your heart.

There is a Chinese proverb (for everything, it seems) but I digress. The proverb we’re considering here is:

If I keep a green bough in my heart, the singing bird will come.

Choice is one of the powers that you have. Choose to keep a green bough in your heart. If you have no place for the singing bird to land, it will fly off and sing for someone else. Provide the place and the space.

Take action on both of these suggestions today. There is no reason to wait until tomorrow to enhance your own personal power and positive nature (which is very powerful, by the way).
