Need Some Help Staying Postive? What is Still Intact in Your Life?

Happy womanWhat is currently (and ‘still’) intact for you?

Regardless of whatever else might have come unhinged, or when thinking about any aspects of your life that really are causing you angst, spend some time now thinking through and answering this question. I encourage you to write at least 20 responses, but you are more than welcome to keep writing up to 40, 60, 80, or more!

It was quite surprising to me the number of ideas that I was able to come up with in a big hurry. Let me give you a few that flew off the top off my head, and you’re going to see that while there are some that are quite significant, others are seemingly inconsequential. So when you’re making your list, just let it roll.

This is a stream-of-consciousness activity. Don’t censor the list with ideas like, ‘Oh brother, this isn’t that big of a deal.’ You know what? It is a big deal. It’s all part of what you HAVE and what is INTACT for you.

So here are some of my responses that I wrote down when I did this activity:

  • My health, my drive and ambition – nobody can take that away from me.
  • Money –  I’m not scrounging around here. That was a reality kind of thing, which we’ll talk about in another session.
  • Our home.
  • My primary relationships are intact – my relationship with my husband, my relationship with my brothers, my friends, other people that are significant to me. All those relationships are intact.
  • I have health insurance.
  • I have money put away for retirement. Granted, it is less than half of what it was in 2007, but I have something in there.
  • I have my smile.
  • I have my belief that the glass is half-full.
  • Teeth.
  • I have what’s in our house – the contents of what’s here.
  • I have creativity.
  • I have my brain.
  • I have so many books in my house and in my storage unit.
  • I have my age. I think that’s going in my favor – in 2 ways; I’m old enough for some wisdom and perspective and young enough to still do many things – like keep saving for retirement! HA!
  • I have several pairs of glasses, so if one pair of glasses broke I have other glasses.
  • I have a computer and all sorts of other equipment.

I think you can see that some of these are pretty darn significant, like my relationship with my husband. The fact that this remains intact is huge. The fact that I have my three pair of glasses is not as big as having a good relationship with my brothers. But it was recognition of, “All right, I have this, I have that, and I have this other thing.”

Ask and answer the question, “What is it that I still have intact?” Make the list, let your mind run – both the big things and the little ones. I hope you are kind of amazed at what you have listed. This would be a fabulous activity to take into your office or to do at a family meeting.

“Always look at what you have left. Never look at what you have lost.”

The activity you just completed will help you stay focused on what you have.
