Energy Charting – Get Rid of (or Minimize) What (or Who) You Dread, Resent, Begrudge, Or Dislike

light switchThink about the answers to these questions, related to your work/professional life:

  • What do you dread, resent, begrudge, dislike?
  • Who do you dread, resent, begrudge, dislike being around?
  • What do you look forward to, anticipate, feel excited about?
  • Who do you look forward to, anticipate, feel excited about being around?

If no answers come to mind (and it would be surprising if they didn’t – if you are honest with yourself), then just start paying attention. Ask and answer the following question as you go through your day or week…

Are there people or events that you dread or that you resent, that you begrudge, or you dislike?

Once you have identified who and what those people and events are. The next step is to figure out how not to have those events, tasks, responsibilities, people in your life. May sound harsh, but it’s your life we’re talking about here!

Related to work, I keep this in mind related to certain people I have worked with because they have hired me in the past. A few of those folks could come back to me now and I wouldn’t work with them – because I already know that working with them costs me much more than what they pay me. It is not that it costs me financially, but it costs me far too much in terms of energy.

What you want to determine is what gets you excited? What are you anticipating? What’s coming up that makes you think, ‘Oh, I can’t wait for this’? So, how can you multiply whatever “this” is so that you have more of it? You can’t multiply “it” if you haven’t even identified what “it” is.

Here’s another professional example: I have learned that there are certain groups with whom I love to work. I look for additional opportunities to be able to work with those kinds of groups and/or with those kinds of people. Since one of my strengths is “maximizer,” (according to the Strengthsfinder assessment) which means that I thrive on working with fabulous people who want to become even more fabulous – I know to seek out and expand the opportunities to work with such folks and groups of such folks.

Whew…now what about your personal time, which is very different from your professional time. Sometimes one is completely positive (or almost so) and the other is where the problem is…and there’s no pattern of which is which. Other times both are great – or both are horrid (which is a wretched way to live).

So, with your personal life, ask and answer the same question as are listed at the beginning of this article:

  • What do you dread, resent, begrudge, dislike?
  • Who do you dread, resent, begrudge, dislike being around?
  • What do you look forward to, anticipate, feel excited about?
  • Who do you look forward to, anticipate, feel excited about being around?

Follow the same steps as described earlier in the article – but this time, consider what works (and what doesn’t work) personally. Believe it or not, you really can have positive in both, most of the time. You want to look for patterns – and capitalize on those patterns.
